Windows: Remove an Inactive Network Interface


When setting an IP address to an interface, you are presented with the following message: “The IP address x.x.x.x you have entered for the network adapter is already assigned to another adapter …”

Inactive Adapter IP Error

This usually occurs when converting or migrating a virtual machine.


  • Login with Administrative rights
  • Open Commnad Prompt (Click Start and type cmd) and press ENTER
  • Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 and press ENTER
  • Click Start and type devmgmt.msc and press ENTER
  • Click View and select Show Hidden Devices
  • Right click the dimmed network adapter and select Uninstall
